Greek culture developed in approximately 900 BC, however it did not develop exclusively on the Greek mainland. Since the Greeks were seafarers, they set up city-states throughout the Mediterranean, especially in Ionia (the western coast of Turkey) and on the southern coast of Italy.

Religion was a culturally unifying factor for the Greeks and fueled their production of art, from monumental temples to small statuettes given as votive offerings. The museum’s collection includes many art objects that provide insights into Greek religious practices, including a group of marble stelae (gravestones).

A renowned collection of decorated pottery offers images of Greek gods as well as scenes from everyday life.
