Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 last year after a 61-year absence from the sport. At the same time, Girard-Perregaux was announced as the marque’s official watch partner and in just under a year, the brands have already collaborated on two new watches. A third co-branded project has now broken cover, and it’s much more than just another logo and colourway slapped onto an existing timepiece.

The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Chronograph Aston Martin F1 Edition features carbon elements from two 2021 Aston Martin F1 race cars, which were then blended with titanium powder to create the watch’s 44mm case. This is an industry first and the new material is said to be as ductile as steel. The components were also mixed with tinted resin, which explains the perculiar hue of the case and guarantees each watch will have its own unique look.

The material of the strap is another industry first. The GP Rubber Alloy in Aston Martin Racing Green is made of FKM rubber, again combined with carbon elements from two 2021 F1 cars. The strap is finished with a fabric-effect façade for a more stylish and complex appearance.

There are also other Aston Martin influences to be found in the design of the new watch. For example, the dial — in Sunray Aston Martin Racing Green — features crosshatching derived from the automaker’s 1921 ‘AM’ badge. The lime-hued hands resonate with the design of the AMF1 race car, while the counterweight on the central chronograph hand echoes the side strakes often seen on Aston Martin road cars.

The number of units released for this special edition is also related to Formula 1, at 306. This is the distance in kilometres (5.891km x 52 laps) that F1 drivers will cover on race day at the 2022 British Grand Prix (all going well), taking place at Silverstone circuit on 3rd July.
