Not Just For Race Drivers

Not Just For Race Drivers

Those following this season’s Formula 1 action might have noticed Mercedes’ W13 race car sported an IWC logo on its halo during the Miami Grand Prix. The Swiss watchmaker has been the team’s official engineering partner since 2013, but 2022 marks the first time that the two brands have collaborated to launch an official team watch.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team” is made from grade 5 titanium, chosen because of the material’s extremely lightweight and rigid nature, as well as the obvious link to Formula 1, where titanium can be found in abundance on the cars competing in the series.

The greyish, slightly shimmering surface of the case is the natural finish of the material after it has been machined and sandblasted. The team’s signature shade of green is used on the marks and hands, contrasting with the black dial. In addition to the chronograph function with hours, minutes, and seconds, there are also day and date displays.

For the movement, the in-house 69385 calibre, made of 231 parts, can be appreciated through the sapphire glass back.  The watch comes with two straps: a rubber version in the team’s signature green hue, and a black embossed calfskin strap with green stitches.

While the official team watch is designed for and being worn by the Mercedes F1 team,  it’s also available to the public exclusively via the watchmaker’s website.
