Popular Choice For Safari Rally

First introduced in 1982, the Porsche 944 arrived on the scene as the marque’s mid-range model and was based on the earlier 924 with numerous upgrades, most strikingly being the wider fenders. It had become one of Porsche’s best-selling models, and was equally successful and popular among motorsports enthusiasts.

The “Safari Rally” specification Porsche 944 shown here was built by Rindt Vehicle Design, a classic Porsche tuning and restoration specialist based in England. The vehicle — first registered in the UK in June 1987 — is powered by the factory-fitted 2.5-litre inline-four pushing around 161hp via a five-speed manual transmission.

The was recently resprayed in a fresh Irish Green finish and features a number of stunning rally-focused upgrades. The stock pop-up headlights are now complemented by a triple spotlight pod on the hood and an aftermarket roof rack with twin SiM spotlights. Other exterior changes include a bespoke sump guard and front and rear towing eyes. The 15-inch ‘Teledial’ alloy wheels finished in gloss black are paired with Maxxis Worm-Drive A/T tyres. Rindt has also opted for an adjustable Nitron suspension setup to give the car an extra lift and much-increased handling performance.

Inside, the 944 is finished in beige cloth and vinyl with pinstripe seat inserts. An Alcantara-trimmed Sabelt steering wheel, Brantz Rallymeters timer, plus centre console spotlight toggle switches have been added, and the odometer shows 132,967 miles from new.

The striking Porsche 944 was recently sold on Collecting Cars for £15,995. While this particular example is gone, it still serves as a good reference in your search for your next unique collector’s item.
