See The Sky Above

Since Maserati’s incredible Mc20 launched last year, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of its rumoured open-top variant. Finally, the MC20 Cielo has arrived — and it’s even prettier than we’d hoped.

The design direction for the brand new spyder lies in its name; in Italian “Cielo” means sky. The key component of the model is its innovative retractable glass roof — it only takes a press of a button and 12 seconds to fully open or close the electrochromic smart glass roof, and this can be performed at speeds of up to 50km/h. The speedy roof is only part of the show, though, because even when the top is on, Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology allows the glass roof to change from opaque to clear instantly with just a press of the Cielo button. That means that the sensation of big, wide-open skies above can be had with the top up or down.

Maserati refused to compromise on performance when it came to the convertible version of its MC20, and as a result, the Cielo adds a mere 65kg over its hardtop stablemate. The patented Nettuno 3-litre V6 twin-turbo engine generates 630hp, and propels the spyder to 100km/h in under three seconds before reaching a top speed of over 320km/h. The hardtop’s stunning and dramatic butterfly doors are also here to stay.

Available exclusively for the MC20 Cielo, the new three-layer metallic Acquamarina colour is based on a racing-inspired pastel grey and is infused with iridescent mica in aquamarine that interacts with light, shimmering with the slightest movement. The limited PrimaSerie Launch Edition also features an ice-coloured interior and golden details in addition to the Acquamarina bodywork.
