Adapt or die is the new MO for even the most storied of fashion houses. Fendi did it, Dior did it, Prada did it, Luis Vuitton did it, and Givenchy has done it, too. News of Matthew M Williams’ appointment as Creative Director at Givenchy was confirmed midway through 2020 and his first collection for the Italian house is now available to shop.

Famed for merging streetwear and luxury seamlessly at his own label 1017 ALYX 9SM, Williams was a rumored candidate for the open role after Clare Waight Keller’s departure. While his appointment came as a surprise to some, a look at the new collection shows that Williams’ sleek leathers and contemporary industrial direction appear to have settled in naturally at Givenchy.

Givenchy’s ready-to-wear offering is not a playground for color. Far from it. Black dominates the collection, as expected, with contrasting highlights coming from trippy, fractured graphics and metallic hits. The pared-back palette of the collection shifts the focus onto the little details that have characterized Williams’ career so far. Taped zips and silver-tone hardware catch the eyes, but the collection, at its core, revolves around basic silhouettes that translate easily into everyday wear.
